Live resin is a type of cannabis concentrate prized for one thing above all: flavor. It captures the full, vivid aroma of the living cannabis plant, the bright, fruity, piney, citrusy notes that usually fade during normal processing. The “live” in the name is the whole story. Most concentrates are made from cannabis that’s been dried and cured first. Live resin is made from plants that are frozen fresh, immediately after harvest, before they ever dry out. That deep freeze locks in the delicate compounds that give each strain its signature smell and taste.
How Is Live Resin Made?
The short version, without the lab coat:
- Fresh freeze. Right after harvest, the cannabis is frozen, no drying, no curing. This preserves the plant’s terpenes (the aromatic compounds responsible for flavor and scent).
- Extraction. The frozen plant material is run through a solvent-based extraction process that pulls out the cannabinoids and terpenes together.
- Purging. The solvent is carefully removed, leaving behind a rich, aromatic concentrate.
The result smells and tastes remarkably close to the fresh plant it came from.
What Makes Live Resin Different?
The magic word is terpenes. Terpenes are what make one strain smell like lemon and another like diesel or berries. They’re fragile, and ordinary drying and curing burns a lot of them off. Because live resin starts from fresh-frozen material, it holds onto far more of them, which is why it’s known as one of the most flavorful, aromatic concentrates on the shelf. It also tends to have a soft, saucy texture and usually comes in a jar, though live resin vape carts are popular too.
Live Resin vs. Other Concentrates
- Live resin vs. distillate: Distillate is highly refined and very potent, but refining strips out most of the natural flavor. Live resin trades a little refinement for a lot more taste and aroma.
- Live resin vs. cured resin: Same idea, different starting point. Cured resin uses dried, cured flower; live resin uses fresh-frozen. Live resin generally wins on flavor.

How to Enjoy Live Resin
- Dabbing, vaporizing a small amount with a dab rig is the classic way to get the full flavor.
